How a container number is checked

A container number (ISO 6346) is 4 letters and 7 digits: the owner code (3 letters), the category (U, J or Z), a 6-digit serial number and the check digit.

To get the check digit, every one of the first 10 characters gets a value (digits keep theirs, A = 10 up to Z = 38, skipping 11, 22 and 33), is multiplied by 1, 2, 4, 8 … 512 by its position, and the results are added. The check digit is the total modulo 11; a result of 10 counts as 0. The table under the checker shows every step for the number you enter.
